The Sack of Kiev

The Siege of Kiev took place in November 1240. Batu Khan sent his cousin Mongke with an army to attack the city of Kiev. Impressed with the splendor of the city, Mongke sent envoys asking the city to surrender. In response his envoys were killed, and Mongke began an assault. A force of Turkic mercenaries, who often worked for the Rus principalities, attempted to reach Kiev to aid in the defense. However, they were defeated by Batu Khan and the main part of the Mongol army on the way.
